2001 Study

In 2001, an initial study was completed by the Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project on 91 miles of the Rio Grande in Colorado. This reach of the river has been most impacted by human intervention. The study identifies measures that could be undertaken to improve the historical functions of the river.

The objectives of the Study were to determine what was required to restore the subject reach of the Rio Grande to the historical functions of:

Providing water for agricultural uses via diversions on the river.

Delivery of Rio Grande Inter-State Compact requirements.

Maintenance of channel capacity and overbank capacity.

Protection of channel and floodplain from damage by flooding.

Maintenance and improvement of riparian habitat.

The Study characterized the subject 91 miles through field reconnaissance, past and present aerial photography, prior studies and information provided by other resource agencies and local residents.  The overall 91 mile reach was divided into eight sub-reaches for the study and planning purposes.  The Technical Advisory Team worked with the third party consultants who performed the Study.

The Study’s major elements included analysis of the:

                 Hydrological System

                 Hydraulic Conditions and the Floodplain

                 Geomorphic Conditions

                 Irrigation Water Diversions

                 Riparian Habitat

                 Local Planning Issues
